The global death toll due to novel coronavirus has surpassed 1,65,000 with around 40,000 dead in the United States itself, the world is witnessing a large number of fast-paced developments.

Here are the top 10 global updates this Sunday morning-

1. Coronavirus-related deaths in the US exceeded 40,000 with nearly half of all casualties in New York, as protests against “stay at home” orders flared in a number of states.

2. The number of deaths in Italy was the lowest in a week, while the pace of new infections also slowed. Spain registered its lowest daily death toll in almost a month.

3. Some countries are moving to ease lockdowns including Iran, which partially reopened its capital, Tehran.

4. A group of more than 150 economists in Australia have urged the government to maintain social distancing restrictions as some urge a lifting of the lockdown to save the economy. “We believe a callous indifference to life is morally objectionable,” they wrote.

5. Globally, nearly 2.4 million people have been diagnosed with the virus while close to 165,000 have died, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Nearly 612,000 people have recovered.

6. The number of coronavirus cases in Germany rose by the least this month as the nation moves ahead with a cautious loosening of restrictions on public life. There were 2,018 new infections in the 24 hours through Monday morning, taking the total to 145,742, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

7. New Zealand will partly relax nationwide lockdown restrictions from next week as the decline in new coronavirus cases indicates its strategy of elimination is working.

8. South Korea reported 13 new coronavirus cases, after marking a two-month low of only eight additional infections on Sunday. The total number of cases in South Korea is 10,674, according to the health ministry’s website. The death toll rose by two to 236.

9. Boris Johnson’s U.K. government issued a furious defense of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, as ministers said there was no imminent prospect of lifting the lockdown on the country.

10. Health ministers from the Group of 20 leading economies said Covid-19 ”has highlighted systemic weaknesses” in health readiness worldwide. The officials commented in a communique issued from Riyadh after a teleconference hosted by Saudi Arabia.
