COVID-19: Kerala and Odisha show improvement; a worrisome situation persists in Maharashtra

Date:

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in its press briefing said that 18 states and Union Territories in India have “shown improvement” in containing this deadly virus. The effective lockdown measures implemented in these states is being seen as the reason.

Kerala and Odisha are leading the nation in this fight, according to the Ministry.

Kerala leads the list with a doubling rate of 72 days followed by Odisha at 39.8 days. Doubling rate is the time taken by the state to report an increase in the number of cases.

While the national average is 7.5 days, these states have recorded an average of 8.5 days. It can be clearly understood that the greater the number of days taken to double the cases, the state can be deemed to be performing better than their counterparts.

The Ministry confirmed 18,601 cases, with 14,759 active cases and 590 deaths on Tuesday.

The situation in Maharashtra continues to be particularly worrisome with more than 4,000 cases and 232 deaths being reported. Mumbai and Pune are the epicenters of the virus in the state.

Overall the nation has witnessed a 40% reduction in the number of cases recorded throughout the nation from the time the lockdown was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March.
