Singapore extends ‘circuit breaker’ measures till June 1

The Republic of Singapore has extended its lockdown, termed ‘circuit breaker’ measures by a month till June 1.

The lockdown that was to have initially ended on May 4, has now been extended by a month after Singapore reported over 1,111 cases in a single day, according to the Ministry of Health.

This is the second consecutive day that Singapore has reported over 1000 cases in a single day.

Most of these cases were reported from the dormitories where many foreign construction labourers stay. Singapore has a large number of foreign construction workers, especially from India and Bangladesh.

The nation had earlier contained the spread of the virus in February.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long announced these ‘circuit breaker’ measures to curb the spread of the virus.

Amongst the various measures, schools, offices and factories are to remain shut. All essential services like restaurants and medical services are permitted to stay open.

Singapore has over 9000 positive cases of the virus and presently remains the most affected nation in the South-East Asian region.
