Manage transition or face new lockdown: WHO

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned nations to check the rate of transmission and manage the transition during the easing of restrictions or else be prepared to deal with extended lockdown conditions.

This warning comes even as most of the European nations such as Germany have conveyed their intention to resume normal socio-economic activities.

Germany announced a phased withdrawal of restrictions and the restarting of a spectator less Bundesliga.

Britain said that though physical distancing norms will continue to be maintained, there will be relaxation of the lockdown conditions from next week.

India from May 3 has partially lifted the various restrictions in place and permitted certain activities.

Data from the Indian Health Ministry shows a sudden spike the number of cases registered after these relaxations were permitted.

It is precisely this that the WHO has warned against.

Tedros Adhanom, WHO’s Director General said that nations should enhance their health infrastructural capabilities and put in a surveillance system before lifting or relaxing lockdown conditions.

He added that it is important to take certain precautionary measures and prevent another lockdown from ensuing.

One of the worst affected nations in Europe Spain has conversely extended the lockdown till May 24, due to the rising number of cases.

The DG also said that it was important to douse the fire together and not present a divided house.

He was referring to the US’s decision to cut funding worth more than USD 500 million.
