Twin Bombings Rip Through Baghdad Market Killing 28 People

Close to 28 people have died and around 73 people injured as twin suicide bombings ripped through a crowded market in Tayaran Square in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. No group has come forward to take responsibility for the blast. Suicide attacks have mostly been used by ISIL (ISIS).

The last suicide bombing took place in January 2018 and since then suicide bombings have been rare in the Iraqi capital since the defeat of the ISIS militant group in 2017 that killed 27 people.

According to the Iraqi military, two attackers wearing explosive vests blew themselves up among shoppers. According to

Major General Yahya Rasool, who is the spokesman for the Iraqi army, said in a statement, “Suicide bombers were being pursued by the security forces before blowing themselves up in Tayaran Square in Baghdad.” As quoted by Media publication Anadulu Agency.

The Iraqi Interior Ministry stated that one of the suicide bombers claimed that he was sick and needed help, and blew himself up when citizens gathered in response to his call.

According to eyewitnesses, the security forces intensified their presence and strict measures taken in the vicinity of the heavily fortified Green Zone, in the centre of Baghdad, to secure the headquarters of foreign diplomatic missions.
