COVID-19 | Top 10 Global Developments This Thursday Morning

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has crossed the 100-million mark, while the deaths have increased to more than 2.1 million, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Here are the top 10 developments this morning:

  1. Iran’s health ministry reported 6,608 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday taking the total nationwide infections to 1,392,314.
  2. Malaysia on Wednesday reported 3,680 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the national total to 194,114.
  3. Iran is negotiating the procurement of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19 and the parties could conclude the deal soon, Mahmoud Vaezi, the Iranian head of presidential office, said on Wednesday.
  4. The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 11,948 within one day to 1,024,298, with the death toll adding by 387 to 28,855, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.
  5. Bangladesh reported 528 new COVID-19 cases and 17 new deaths on Wednesday, making the tally at 533,444 and death toll at 8,072, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.
  6. Mass vaccination against coronavirus is taking place in the Russian capital Moscow where people can get vaccinated not only in hospitals and polyclinics but also in large shopping centres, as well as in opera theatres and other popular points where mobile medical teams work.
  7. Thailand on Wednesday confirmed 819 new COVID-19 infections, with most of the cases being found in a province that is the epicentre of the latest outbreak first detected in mid-December, official data showed.
  8. Nepal on Wednesday began its nationwide inoculation drive after receiving one million Covishield vaccines, manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII), from the Indian government last week.
  9. Nepal’s caretaker Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has expressed his gratitude towards India for providing one million dosages of Covishield vaccine within a week of its rollout in India.
  10. Russia’s single-day coronavirus cases increase fell below 18,000 for the first time since October 29, as 17,741 new cases were confirmed in the past 24 hours (down from 18,241 the day before), the response center said on Wednesday.
