Fact Check: Did A Farmer Die After Being Shot At During The Tractor Rally In Delhi? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A picture post is going viral on social media claiming that a farmer died after he was shot at by the Delhi police personnel in Delhi’s ITO while participating in the tractor rally.

The post can be found here, here, here, here, here, and here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.

The farmer has been identified as Navneet Singh.

We ran a search and found that while it was initially reported that the farmer was shot, it was later clarified by the police that the tractor turned turtle after it rammed into the police barricades near the ITO junction in central Delhi.

CCTV footage of the incident showed a blue tractor crashing through yellow barricades by Delhi Police at high speed. Delhi Police’s FIR on the ITO incident mentions the sequence of events.

On further investigation, we found that the post-mortem report of the farmer has confirmed that he succumbed to ‘antemortem injuries’ he had sustained after his tractor overturned and that he was not shot.

“The post-mortem report clarifies that he was not shot. He died of the antemortem injuries which he received after his tractor overturned as seen in a viral video,” Avinash Chandra, a senior UP police officer, was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

The same was reported by other media organisations like The Quint and The Print.

Hence, from the above information, it is clear that the post is FALSE.
