FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above picture and found that the claim attached to it is false.

When we put the picture through Reverse Image Search, we came across the original picture on the Getty Images website.

‘Sikh protests| NEW DELHI, INDIA – MAY 05: Sikh community members scuffle with policemen as they shout anti government slogans during a demonstration against the acquittal of Congress politician Sajjan Kumar, in New Delhi on May 5, 2013. (Photo by Shekhar Yadav/The India Today Group via Getty Images)’,(sic) the caption read.

According to the caption, the picture was taken on May 5, 2013, during a protest against the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. The Sikh community had protested to show their disagreement on the decision.

We also found a report by The Daily Mail, dated May 5, 2013, featuring the same picture.

The caption read, ‘Shameful scenes: A Sikh protester falls to the floor during a protest demanding justice for the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots’.

We noticed the watermark ‘Shekhar Yadav’ on the bottom left corner of the picture, so we scanned the photojournalist’s Twitter profile to look for the picture. We found that in a tweet dated January 29, 2021, he has clarified that the picture was taken by him many years ago.

“This photo of mine is from the 1984 sikh riots anniv protests at the jantar mantar from 10 years ago. Kindly stop using this as propaganda. दुकान के नाम पे कुछ भी ?”, the tweet read.

Hence, the above information proves that the picture is old and is not related to the ongoing farmers’ protest.
