Citizens Speak Out Against Myanmar Military Coup

Date:

Even as the United Nations Security Council(UNSC) had asked for the military in Myanmar the country’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi a few days ago, now citizens have taken to the streets to protest in Yangon and demand Suu Kyi’s release. On day two of the protests on Sunday, there were more of youngsters and a larger crowd compared to Saturday and the protests were more organized. People held up three fingers, as a sign of protest against authoritarianism, while buses slowed down and blew the horn to show support with Suu Kyi as part of pro-democracy protests.

Protestors held signs saying, “We want our leader”, a sign that people at large want democracy to be restored in the country and popular leader Suu Kyi to lead their country. On Monday Suu Kyi and Myanmar’s President U Win Myint were taken captive in a military coup and defy the outcome of the November 2020 elections where Suu Kyi emerged as the popular choice of the people.

Protestors were seen marching in the University area and changing course to avoid confrontation with Police. The country has been grappling with an internet blackout as the military attempted to take control. The Myanmar Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) ordered a complete nationwide shutdown of data network on Saturday.

The military however is unrelenting so far and Suu Kyi’s release is nowhere in sight. With pressure from several countries including the United States, the military will have to mull it’s next step.
