Fact Check: Clipped Video of PM Modi’s Speech Shared To Create Misleading Narrative; Here’s The Truth

Ahead of assembly elections in five Indian states/UT, a video of Prime Minister Modi is being shared on social media wherein he can be heard saying, “Show only dreams to the poor, tell lies, make them fight amongst each other and rule.”

“मितरों #गरीब को सिर्फ #सपने दिखाओ #झूठ बोलो उसे आपस में लड़ाओ और #राज करो,” the post caption read.

(Translation: Just show the dreams to the poor, lie to them, make them fight each other and then rule).

FACT CHECK 

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found it to be misleading.

We ran a keyword search along with a Reverse Image Search on the keyframes from the video.

The search led us to a video uploaded by the official YouTube channel of Bharatiya Janata Party on March 21, 2021. “People of Assam know Congress guarantees-False Manifesto, Confusion, Corruption & scams and more,” the title of the video read.

We found that the video is from PM Modi’s speech in Bokakhat, Assam.
The viral clip can be seen at 0:21 sec into the above video, where he is saying, “show dreams to the poor, lie to them, make them fight each other and rule. This has always been Congress’s formula for staying in power.”
The full video of the speech was also streamed live on BJP’s channel on March 21, 2021.
In the above video, the viral clip can be head at 35.20 min.
Hence, from the above information, it is clear that the video has been taken out of context and is being shared to create a misleading narrative.
