Fact Check: Did TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee Say She Will Quit Politics If She Loses Nandigram? Here’s The Truth

Date:

After BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari won the keenly contested Nandigram assembly seat defeating Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, a picture post started doing the rounds on social media suggesting that Banerjee had earlier made a statement that she would quit politics if she is defeated in Nandigram.

The text on the picture in Hindi read: “देखें लाज शर्म है कि नहीं? 1622 वोटों से हार गई है…और अब थूक चाट लेगी, क्योंकि उन्होंने कहा था अगर नंदीग्राम हार गई तो राजनीति छोड़ दूंगी इसे ट्रेंड करवाओ सभी हिन्दुओं”

(Translation: Let’s see if she has some dignity or not? She has lost by 1622 votes … and will take her words back because she made a statement that if she is defeated in Nandigram then she will leave politics. Make it trend, Hindus)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found it to be misleading.

Firstly, we put the above statement through a Google search along with keywords such as ‘Nandigram defeat’, ‘quit politics’, etc, and found that the statement about quitting politics if defeated was not made by Mamata Banerjee but by Suvendu Adhikari.

A report by The Economics Times published on January 18, 2021, stated that Adhikari in a statement said, “If I am fielded by my party from Nandigram, I will defeat her by a margin of at least 50,000 votes or I will quit politics”.

We also found a video on YouTube published by The Republic World on January 18, 2021. The title of the video read, “Suvendu Counters Mamata’s Nandigram Dare; Vows ‘Will Quit Politics If I Don’t Defeat Her”.

The video mentions that BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari accepted the challenge thrown by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to contest from Nandigram assembly seat, asserting he will defeat her in the election or quit politics.

When a public figure makes a statement, it is usually there on their official website and social media handles. We scanned Banerjee’s Twitter handle but did not find anything remotely close to the statement in question.

In conclusion, upon analysing our findings, it is safe to say that the statement made by Adhikari is being falsely attributed to Mamata Banerjee.
