A disturbing video has surfaced on social media platforms showing a group of men hacking a person to death with the claim that the visuals show post-poll violence in West Bengal.
A Facebook user shared the video with the caption in Hindi that translates to, “TMC workers dragged my husband out of the house and dared him to say Jai Shri Ram. Where are your BJP people? Who will save you now? They killed my husband in Gangnapur Ranaghat while saying this. – Uttam Ghosh’s Wife ( Dainik Bhaskar interview section) This must used to happen during Aurangzeb’s time?”
The video is viral on Facebook and Twitter with the same narrative.

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found that the video is being shared with a false claim.
With the help of reverse image search on the keyframes of the video, we found several articles published on Brazilian news websites in 2018.
According to one such article published on January 7, 2018, the video shows a murder that happened at Praia do Futuro in Fortaleza, Ceara in Brazil on December 30, 2017.
Monolitos Posts also reported the incident and identified the victim as Wesley Tiago de Sausa Carvalho, who was 17 at that time. The suspects involved were all identified by the Civil Police of the State of Ceara, two of whom were arrested. The police report mentions that the teen was killed with axes, hoes (gardening equipment), and stones.
Clearly, the viral video is circulation is an old video from Brazil. However, it is true that in a virtual press conference, BJP leaders Sambit Patra and Anirban Ganguly named the party workers who lost their lives in the post-poll violence in West Bengal, which also includes the name of ‘Uttam Ghosh’- a BJP worker from Nadia district of West Bengal.
Therefore, a video from Brazil dating back to 2018 is being falsely linked to the post-poll violence in West Bengal.
