Fact Check: Did Israel Name Its Jet ‘Soumya’ After The Indian Nurse Who Died In Airstrike? Here’s The Truth

Date:

An image of a jet with ‘Soumya’ written on the side has gone viral on social media. It is being claimed that Israel has named its fighter jet ‘Soumya’ to pay tribute to Soumya Santosh, who was working as a caregiver in Ashkelon, near the Gaza strip, and was killed on May 10.

The post is being shared on Facebook with a caption in Hindi that reads, “इजराइल ने अपनी फाइटर प्लेन पर #भारतीय बेटी का नाम #सौम्या को नमन लिखकर उससे #फिलिस्तीन आर्मी चीफ के घर पर बम गिरा दिया..सच्ची श्रद्धांजलि”

(Translation: Israel, on its fighter plane, wrote a tribute to the #Indian daughter’s name #Soumya and dropped a bomb on the house of the #Polystine Army Chief…Second tribute)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be misleading.

Doing a reverse image search directed us to a link to a Quora post dated 2020, which carried the same image. Though, in this image, we could not find “Soumya” embossed on the jet. According to the post, the image was of Chengdu J10, aka J-10C aircraft.

We also came across an article published on a Chinese website last year which carried the viral image. Here also, we could not find “Soumya” embossed on the jet. Thus, it can be concluded that the image has been digitally morphed and is being shared with a false claim.

The image caption reads, “As the J-10C adopts new standards, its craftsmanship is also the best besides the J-20 stealth fighter; this point can be experienced in detail from the J-10B that has been publicly displayed many times.”

We found J-10C is a fighter jet produced by the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), i.e., the Chinese Air Force.

Hence, an image of the Chinese fighter jet has been digitally morphed and is being shared with a claim that Israel is using the fighter jet to pay tribute to the Indian caretaker, Soumya Santosh, who died in Israel.
