Fact Check: Old Video Of Tree Swaying Dangerously Linked To Cyclone Tauktae

Date:

As Cyclone Tauktae made landfall along the western coast of India, a few videos started circulating on social media claiming to show the intensity and havoc of the cyclonic storm.

One of the videos in circulation shows a tree swaying dangerously due to strong winds and rains. “Nature dancing on cyclone music…enjoy it #TauktaeCyclone,” the caption read.

The above post can be seen here.

A Facebook user also shared the same video in the name of Rajasthan.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found that the video in circulation is old.

On putting the extracted keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search, we found that the video was uploaded on YouTube in August 2020. According to the title, the video is from Mumbai.

Taking a cue from this, we ran a keyword search and found multiple media reports from 2020 featuring the same video.

Mumbai Mirror shared the same video on August 6, 2020, with the headline, “Viral Video: Coconut tree swaying dangerously due to strong winds and rain in Mumbai.”

The description of the video read: In a visual which shows the impact of the strong winds in Mumbai, a coconut tree was seen swaying dangerously on Wednesday. With the incessant rains crippling all activities in Mumbai, the maximum city received the highest rainfall of the season within just 12 hours on Wednesday, besides the highest-ever wind speed.

The same video was also found in a report by Asianet News dated August 6, 2020.

This proves that the video in circulation is old and is NOT related to recent Cyclone Tauktae.
