Tamil courtroom drama Jai Bhim has been shortlisted and nominated for Best Feature Film at the Oscars 2022. Earlier, on January 18, 2022, Jai Bhim got featured on the Oscars YouTube page and amid this, several social media users started claiming that ‘Jai Bhim’ is the first Indian movie to be featured on the Oscars YouTube page.
A Facebook user shared a screengrab of Oscar’s YouTube channel with the caption, “Jai Bhim Becomes The First Indian movie to be featured on the Oscars 2022 official YouTube channel.”
Several Twitter users were sharing the screengrab with a similar caption.
FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the viral claim and found it to be misleading.
We checked the official YouTube channel of Oscars and found Satyajit Ray’s ‘Two’ to be featured on the page on 03 May 2016. As a part of a restoration project, “Two,” also known as “Parable of Two,” was preserved at the Academy Film Archive along with 18 other of Ray’s films after the renowned Indian filmmaker was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1992.
‘Two’ is a 1964 short film made as part of a trilogy under the banner Esso World Theatre.
Whereas, Tamil star Suriya’s courtroom drama Jai Bhim is the first Tamil movie to have been featured in the official YouTube channel of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, under its ‘Scene At The Academy’ category.
As per the Oscars’ official website, ‘Scene at the Academy’ is a segment that focuses on filmmaking and the breakdown of important scenes in a movie.
Therefore, it can be concluded that ‘Jai Bhim’ is not the first Indian movie to be featured on the Oscars YouTube channel and the post is misleading.
