Fact Check: Old Image Viral To Suggest Ukraine’s Flag Being Replaced By Soviet Flag

Date:

Russian President Vladimir Putin on April 14, 2022, declared that the port city of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov was “liberated” after nearly two months of siege, despite leaving hundreds of defenders still holed up inside the giant Azovstal steelworks.

In the above context, an image collage is widely being shared with a caption claiming that Russia replaced the Ukrainian flag with the Soviet flag in Mariupol.

The post is shared with a caption that reads, “Krasnoye znamya Over the plant “Ilyich” in Mariupol, for which there have been fierce battles in recent weeks, the Red Banner has been hoisted.”

The link to the post can be seen here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be Misleading.

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search of the collage, we found that the same image collage was published on another website on September 3, 2015.

We also found a video shared by a YouTube channel, VOXKOMM International, on March 4, 2015, with a description that read, “Prizrak Brigade, Communist militiaman raises the Soviet flag on freed Debaltsevo.”

However, according to a media report, Russian soldiers have begun raising Soviet flags in recently occupied areas of Ukraine.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral image is old and does not show any recent photograph depicting Russia raising its flag in Ukraine.
