Fact Check: Did Arvind Kejriwal Say Corruption Should Continue? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A 13-second video clip is being shared on social media claiming that Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal has said that corruption should continue. The video clip has Arvind Kejriwal speaking on the left and on the right side, there are newspaper clippings of headlines talking of corruption of AAP leaders.

The video is being shared on Facebook with the Hindi caption, “AAP का भ्रष्टाचार चलते रहना चाहिए!”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the video and performed a Reverse Image Search with relevant keywords. This search directed us to the official Twitter handle of the Aam Aadmi Party which carried the longer version of the video. The tweet text can be translated in English to, “Nowadays big economists are writing that if freebies continue, the country will be ruined. Not a single economist has written that the country will be ruined if “corruption” continues. No one even wrote that the freebies of politicians should be stopped. The public should be closed- Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.”

In the original video he can be heard saying, “Nowadays, I see prominent economists publishing pieces in newspapers about freebies, implying that if the freebies culture continues, the country would be devastated. I have not seen a single economist write an article claiming that if corruption continues, the country would be destroyed. Then, corruption should continue.” He further states, “How am I able to give away freebies? How am I going to pay for it? I don’t have the funds to do so. I have stopped corruption. Money that used to flow into the wallets of politicians and cops is now shared among common people.”

The entire speech of Arvind Kejriwal was also uploaded on AAP’s YouTube channel

Thus, it is evident from the above information that a cropped clip of Arvind Kejriwal is being falsely shared with misleading claims.
