FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be misleading.

On breaking the video into multiple keyframes and putting them through Google Reverse Image Search, we found the same video was tweeted by Sri Lankan news organisation, NewsWire on May 9, 2022, with a caption that reads, “Several vehicles including a Lamborghini destroyed in Avenra Garden hotel attack in Negombo.”

NewsCutter.LK also reported that Luxury vehicles were set on fire near the Avenra Hotel in Sri Lanka.

On further searching with appropriate keywords, we found a report published by Sky News on May 18, 2022. The report quoted Avenra Hotel’s manager, Yohan Perera, who said that a mob of around 2,000 people attacked the complex, believing the owner had links with the ruling Rajapaksa family. However, Mr Perera insists there was no connection.
Thus, we can ascertain that the viral claim is misleading.
