Kerala Reports Two Cases of Norovirus; Here’s All you Need to Know

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala government on Sunday confirmed the two cases of ‘highly-contagious’ Norovirus in two children in the state.

The health department suggested that the virus has spread through contaminated water and food. State health minister, Veena George, has urged people to maintain proper hygiene.

“The health of those two children are stable now, no need to be concerned at the moment but all should remain careful and maintain cleanliness” newswire PTI quoted George as saying.

Reportedly, Eight students of government upper primary school at Kayamkulam in Kerala’s Alappuzha district were infected and admitted to a hospital on Saturday after they complained of uneasiness due to a suspected case of food poisoning. Samples of the students were tested.

The state health minister stated that the virus “can be cured” and “prevented from spreading”.

What is Norovirus?
Norovirus is a contagious disease that causes diarrhoea and vomiting. Infection can cause anyone, and make them sick. Also, known as a “stomach bug”.

Causes of Norovirus
1. Direct contact with an infected person.
2. Having contaminated food or water.
Symptoms of Norovirus
1. Vomiting and diarrhoea
2. Pain in the stomach
3. Nausea

How to Prevent?
1. Wash your vegetables and fruits and your hands too
2. Prefer to stay home for two days if you are infected
3. Don’t prepare food for others
