Monkeypox Symptoms Now Different From Those Of Earlier Outbreaks: Homosexual Men At High Risk

Date:

The monkeypox virus, the virus that infected 18K in the world, is a member of the variola virus family. Variola virus the virus that causes smallpox.

Some get confused that chickenpox and monkeypox are the same, let us clear you that they are unrelated.

As per the study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), the symptoms of monkeypox found in the present outbreak are very different from those reported during the previous outbreaks in African regions.

The claim is supported by a retrospective observational examination of 197 people, all of whom were men, who had been diagnosed with the disease in London. Out of which, 196 identified as gay, bisexual, or homosexual.

According to the study, the current outbreak is showing more rectal pain and penile swelling (oedema) than previous ones (The Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2007–11 and Nigeria, 2017–18).

Researchers advise doctors to take monkeypox infection into account when treating individuals who exhibit these symptoms. They also stated that monkeypox infection “should be considered for ongoing review or inpatient management” if there are significant penile lesions or acute rectal pain.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recently, urged that the men are at risk of catching monkeypox and should consider reducing their sexual partners “for the moment.”

“That means making safe choices for yourself and others, for men who have sex with men,” Tedros said. “This includes, for the moment, reducing your number of sexual partners.”

“This is an outbreak that can be stopped… The best way to do that is to reduce the risk of exposure,” Tedros told a news conference from Geneva. “That means making safe choices for yourself and others.”
