Fact Check: Donyi Polo Airport Is NOT First Airport Built in Arunachal Pradesh Since Independence

Date:

A picture of an airstrip has gone viral on social media, claiming that the first-ever airport is built in Arunachal Pradesh after Independence.

The text in Hindi reads: “आजादी के बाद पहली बार अरुणांचल प्रदेश में एयरपोर्ट बना
यह है असली भारत जोड़ो” (English translation: “For the first time after Independence, an airport was built in Arunachal Pradesh. This is real Bharat Jodo”)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post, and found it to be misleading.

Scanning through a Reverse Image Search, we found an NDTV article, dated November 18, 2022, having the same image. The article was about the newly inaugurated Donyi Polo Airport. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated this airport on November 19, 2022. As per the report, it is the ‘first greenfield airport in Arunachal Pradesh’.

What Is Greenfield Airport?

Greenfield airports normally begin from scratch on unused lands where there is no need to remodel or demolish an existing structure.

As per the press release by the Prime Minister’s Office, Donyi Polo Airport is the fourth operational airport in the state.

So, it can be concluded that the Donyi Polo Airport is not the first airport in Arunachal Pradesh as claimed, though, it is the first ‘greenfield airport’ in the state.
