Washington: Former Hollywood film mogul Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of rape at a trial court in Los Angeles on Monday.
After nearly five years of the #MeToo movement which brought forward actors from Hollywood to speak about the acts of harassment and sexual misconduct instigated by Harvey over the span of his career.
The jury of eight men and four women reached the verdict while hearing at the second criminal trial of the 70-year-old, who is currently two years into serving a sentence of 23 years for a rape and sexual assault conviction in New York.
According to reports, the jury found Weinstein guilty of rape, forced oral copulation, and another sexual misconduct count involving a woman Jane Doe 1, to protect her anonymity.
However, The jury reported that they could not reach a verdict on allegations by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom, and a woman known as Jane Doe 2. The court declared a mistrial on those counts.
He was also acquitted of sexual battery against one of the accusers known as Jane Doe 3. According to a BBC report, Weinstein faces up to 24 years in prison when he is sentenced.
Siebel Newsom in a statement added that “Harvey Weinstein will never be able to rape another woman. He will spend the rest of his life behind bars where he belongs.”
Lauren Young, one of the only four accusers who testified in both the trials of Harvey. She was a model and aspiring to be an actor and screenwriter and met Harvey in 2013 when he allegedly trapped her in a hotel room and groped her.
However, the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the charges involving Lauren Young.
