New Delhi: Amid the gruesome incident of a woman being dragged by a car for nearly seven kilometers, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal on Tuesday wrote to the Ministry of Home Affairs and suggested five suggestions to reduce such acts.
Swati Maliwal in a letter to the Home Ministry added that “The Delhi Commission for Women is of the view that lack of police resources and accountability are the major reasons for high crime rate against women and girls in the capital state”.
Key Pointers of the Letter Includes:
- Setting Up of a High-Level Committee In the Home Ministry: The suggestion included a committee headed by the Home Minister with the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Delhi Chief Minister, Home Secretary, Police Commissioner, and DCW Chairperson. The committee should meet once every month and work towards creating a coordinated strategy for tackling crimes against women.
- Increase Accountability of Delhi Police: The letter highlighted the need to urgently increase the accountability of Police officers and further sensitize its officers on issues concerning cases against women and girls.
- Increase Human Resource of Delhi Police: An Urgent need to recruit 66,000 additional police personnel in the force as the department faces lack of personnel.
- Improve PCR system in Delhi: Letter citing media reports highlighted that eye-witnesses made several calls to the emergency helpline but allegedly no PCR van reached the spot for several hours. Delhi Police should be strengthened so that it is equipped to deal with emergency situations.
- Modernise, Sensitize, And Incentivize Delhi Police: The letter highlighted the need for police personnel to undergo regular gender sensitization and the need to modernise the Police department with infrastructural developments.
