China Reports Nearly 60,000 Deaths Due To COVID In Past Few Weeks: Reports

Date:

Beijing: Amid the recent spike in COVID cases, China on Saturday reportedly claimed that more than 60,000 people died in hospitals due post the country abandoned the zero-COVID policy.

According to a health official quoted by Reuters, COVID fever and emergency hospitalizations had peaked and the number of hospitalized patients was continuing to decline.

Jiao Yahui, head of the Bureau of Medical Administration under the National Health Commission (NHC) as quoted by Reuters added that “Between December 8 and January 12, the number of COVID-related deaths in Chinese hospitals totalled 59,938,”.

She further added that out of the total fatalities, 5,503 were caused by respiratory failure due to COVID and the remainder resulted from a combination of COVID and other diseases.

Amid the surge in the number of COVID-related cases, China in December last year, abandoned the three-year long strict zero-COVID policy.
