Date:

A video of Russian President Vladimir Putin travelling in an aircraft, being escorted by multiple jets, is widely circulating on social media. Many users claim that the video shows President Putin travelling to attend Iranian President Raisi’s funeral.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the claim, and found it to be False.

Doing a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team found an extended version of the viral video posted on YouTube, dated December 29, 2017, with a title: ‘Самолет Владимира Путина на пути в Каир сопровождали истребители ВКС РФ’ (English version: Vladimir Putin’s plane was escorted by Russian Aerospace Forces fighters on its way to Cairo).

We also found a post on X by Russia Today, a Russian state-controlled international news network, dated December 13, 2017, with a caption: Watch footage of #Putin looking on as a #SU30SM fighter jet escorts his presidential plane during his recent trip to #Syria.

The video in the post is identical to the viral video. Additionally, the Twitter post included a link to a report originally posted on December 11, 2017.

As per the report, Russian President Putin was travelling to the Khmeimim air base in western Syria for an unannounced visit — his first to Syria. He was being escorted by Su-30 fighter jets.

Therefore, it is evident that the video does not show Vladimir Putin travelling to attend the Iranian President’s funeral, but travelling to an airbase in Syria.
