BCCI Announces Schedule For WPL 2023, Gujarat Giants To Clash With MI In Opening Game

Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced the schedule of the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) with the opening clash between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Stadium on 4th March.

The inaugural edition will have five teams – Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and UP Warriorz.

The franchises took part in the first WPL auction with India’s Smriti Mandhana being the top buy as she was sold for a whopping ₹3.40 Crore to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Indian Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was picked by Mumbai Indians for ₹1.80 Crores. Among the overseas players, Australia all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner and England all-rounder Natalie Sciver were the top buys as they were sold to Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians for ₹3.20 Crore respectively.

From the India U19 stars, ICC U19 T20 World Cup winning captain, Shafali Verma was the top buy, sold to Delhi Capitals for ₹2 Crore.

The eliminator round of the WPL will start from 24th March with the finals slated on 26th March at the Brabourne Stadium.

The Women’s Premier League will have a total of 20 league matches and two Playoff games that will be played in a duration of 23 days.
