Hathras Gangrape-Murder Case: UP Court Acquits Three Of Four Accused, One Convicted

Date:

New Delhi: An Uttar Pradesh Court on Thursday acquitted three men out of four men accused in the 2020 Hathras case in which a young Dalit woman was raped and murdered while the main suspect convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

According to the news agency ANI, the three acquitted have been identified as Ravi, Ramu, and Luv Khush. The report further added that the punishment is due to be announced later in the day.

The gruesome crime just 200km from the national capital sparked nationwide protests and made global headlines. A 20-year-old woman died in a Delhi hospital after she was allegedly gang-raped in her village in Hathras.

According to her statement to the police, she said she was dragged by her dupatta into the fields from a spot where she had been cutting grass with her mother and brother.

The woman had suffered multiple fractures and a gash in her tongue, drawing parallels to the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape.

The actions of police sparked major controversy as she was cremated in the middle of night in her village by the district administration.
