78 Arrested, ‘Waris Punjab De’ Chief Still On The Run, Says Punjab Police

Chandigarh: In a major crackdown operation to arrest Amritpal Singh, a self-styled radical Sikh preacher, the Punjab police have arrested 78 people and several others have been detained.

According to a statement from Punjab Police, “Punjab Police launched a massive state-wide Cordon And Search Operations in the state against elements of ‘Waris Punjab De’. 78 persons arrested so far, while, several others detained. Several others including Amritpal Singh are on the run.”

The police further added that “During the state-wide operation, nine weapons, including one 315 bore rifle, seven rifles of 12 bore, one revolver and 373 live cartridges of different caliber have been recovered.”

All mobile internet services, all SMS services (except banking & mobile recharge) & all dongle services provided on mobile networks, except the voice calls have been suspended across the state on Saturday.

The radical Sikh leader clashed with the police on the outskirts of Amritsar demanding the release of one of Amritpal’s aides last month.

Amritpal Singh leads a group called ‘Waris De Punjab’, a radical organization started by actor and activist Deep Sidhu.

The Punjab Police further added that the Internet will remain suspended till Sunday amid the bid to arrest the leader.
