Fact Check: Old Image Of Huge Traffic Jam In China Viral With Misleading Context

Date:

The picture of a huge traffic jam is being shared online, claiming that this traffic in China’s G4 Expressways has 50 lanes.

The post reads: China 50 lane traffic, G4 Expressways

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be misleading.

A report by China Daily featured the image and as per its caption, the picture was clicked in October 2015, near a toll station along the G4 Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway at the end of Golden Week, a week-long national holiday in China.

We also found a report by Forbes on the above traffic jam. However, the picture used in the article is of the same location but from another angle.

But checking the Google Maps, we realised that G4 Expressway is a 4-lane highway, but near the Zhuozhou Toll Gate, the road expands to the width of approximately 50 cars. And the toll gate has only 25 lanes.

Thus, from the above fact check, it is clear that the post is misleading.
