Fact Check: Viral Image, Claiming Locals In Sudan Raze Oil Pipelines, Is Misleading

Date:

Recently, clashes erupted between elements of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and a government paramilitary group the Rapid Support Force (RSF), in Khartoum, Sudan. This resulted from the rising tensions in an attempt to transition to democracy in the country after a military coup in 2021.

Against this backdrop, a post claiming locals have razed down an oil pipeline in Port Sudan is widely circulated on social media. According to some users, this pipeline carries oil to South Sudan.

A Facebook user posted the viral image with a caption: Breaking news::::;::

Oil pipelines that carry South Sudan oil have been razed down by locals in Port Sudan as fighting intensifies across the country.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

We ran a Reverse Image Search for both images separately.

Image 1:

We spotted a stock image, titled: Environmental damage from oil during transportation stock photo, dated August 16, 2010, on iStock a Canadian stock content website. Although the description or the title of the image doesn’t inform much, the date of posting confirms that the image has been online since 2010. Therefore, there is no way it can be related to the recent clashes in Sudan.

We found a similar picture with the same description on Shutterstock as well.

Image 2:

This image, too, was uploaded on iStock, dated June 8, 2006, with a title: Burning Pipe Flange 2 stock photo. Again, the date of posting precedes the ongoing war in Sudan, proving that it has been used recently to mislead people.

The same image has been uploaded on Getty Images as well without any description.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming locals razed down an oil pipeline in Port Sudan, is false.
