Fact Check: Viral Post Falsely Claims That Wrestlers Have Ended The Protest At Jantar Mantar In Delhi

Date:

A picture claiming that the Wrestlers’ protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi has come to an end, and the protesters have failed to fool the people of India with their allegations, is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have shared the post mocking the protesting wrestlers for allegedly imposing false allegations.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption:

(English translation: Jija Saali Sangharsh Samiti’s play ended, no one came at night with a tractor. These Chirkut people had come with the dream of becoming direct #Olympians and are returning after playing “Bed Polo”….!!

The Jantar-Mantar drama of the agitators has come to an end. They have not been able to make the people of India Pappu for a long time! “I am going well, remember me in your prayers….!”

Dirty politics in sports and false allegation of sexual abuse got leaked and the drama did not last long and the wrestlers lost their respect in the crowded market, so different careers were also ruined.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Searching for the authenticity of the viral claim, we found a news report in The Times of India, dated May 8, 2023, a day after the date of the viral post.

The news report titled: Wrestlers Protest News LIVE: Farmers break through barricades to join protest, informs that the ongoing protest has been joined by the farmers’ union as well. The article gives a timeline of the protest and also informs that the wrestlers held a candle march on May 7, 2023.

Other media organisations like The Indian Express, Wion News, and NDTV have also covered the same news report about the protest from May 8, 2023

This confirms that the protest has not been called off, and the viral claim is being shared to mislead people. Running the Google Reverse Image Search, we spotted a news report in The Quint, dated April 29, 2023.

The article talks about the power and water supply cut at the protest venue with a generic description of the image. Nowhere in the report, it is mentioned that the protest has been called off.

The same image has also been used in another report by Hindustan Time, dated April 29, 2023. Here too, the article talks about the water and power supply cut at Jantar Mantar, and not about any halt or end of the protest.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming wrestlers have ended the protest at Jantar Mantar, is false.
