Performing a Reverse Image Search, we traced a YouTube channel ‘Maithili Bazar’ carrying an extended version of the same viral video on May 8, 2021, with a caption: “After all, why did the bridegroom beat the bride at the time of farewell and the groom’s father beat the groom?” Part of the viral video can be seen in this YouTube video from 2 minutes 50 seconds. The description of the video mentions the names of the actors acting in it.
The alleged groom and his father-in-law in the viral video can also be seen in other videos on the channel.
To our surprise, the ‘About Us’ section of the ‘Maithili Bazar’ YouTube channel informs that this is a well-known channel in the Maithili language that posts comedy videos for the purpose of entertainment.
Thus, it is clear that a scripted video of a groom being thrashed for asking for a dowry is shared as a real incident.
