Fact Check: Video From The Philippines Erroneously Shared As French Library Burnt During Riots

Date:

The intensity of protests in France, triggered by the police shooting of a teenager, is reported to be diminishing. However, images and videos depicting the aftermath of the unrest continue to circulate widely on social media.

A video showing a huge building located right beside a water body engulfed in flames is making the rounds, claiming that this is a library in Marseille, France.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Rioters have burned down the largest library in France. The Alcazar Library in Marseille included an archive of one million historically significant documents.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Multiple news reports confirm that the Alcazar library in Marseille, France, was vandalised, according to local officials. CNN also reported on the incident, stating that the vandalism took place on June 30.

Upon examining the photos and Google Street View images of the library, noticeable differences were observed between the actual building and the one depicted in the viral video. Additionally, contrary to the viral video, the Alcazar library was not situated directly adjacent to a body of water. A comparison on Google Maps revealed that while the library was in proximity to the coast, it was not situated right alongside it.

Doing the Reverse Image Search, we found a similar video on Al Jazeera English’s official YouTube channel, with a title: “Major fire engulfs historical Manila post office building.”

Conducting a keyword search, we found several videos of the burning Manila Central Post Office building shared by news sources like South China Morning Post, The Guardian, Sky News, and Times of India in May 2023.

According to a report by CNN Philippines, on the night of May 21, around 11 pm local time, a fire broke out in the historic Manila Central Post Office building. It took more than 30 hours to bring the fire under control. Authorities stated that 15 people were injured, including 11 members of the Bureau of Fire Protection, one volunteer, and one civilian.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that a video from the Philippines is falsely shared as a French library burnt during riots.
