Fact Check: Has Karnataka Govt Mandated Quran Recitation In Government Schools? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A video of schoolkids reciting Islamic verses is doing the rounds on social media, claiming that the Congress-led Karnataka government mandated Quran recitation in government schools. The viral video shows a girl delivering a speech while “Happy Bakrid” can be seen written in the background.

A Facebook user shared this video and wrote: अविश्वसनिय है । [English translation: Incredible. Now the teaching of Islam has been made compulsory in schools. The Congress government in Karnataka has issued an order to make Hindu students read the Quran in all schools. In this way, the Congressmen will ruin the country. And they are doing it because if you get the education of Islam from the school itself, then you will forget the Indian culture.]

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Performing a keyword search on Google, the NewsMobile team found a report by NewsNine, dated July 1, 2023, showing similar visuals.

According to the report, some members of a right-wing organisation objected after Quranic verses were recited at Nanasagar International Public School in the Hassan district of Karnataka on the occasion of Bakrid. The report quoted  Suja Philip, the school principal, saying: “We only did it to instil spirituality in the students. We had no other intentions. If it is wrong, we will ensure that it won’t be done henceforth. We celebrate all the festivals here. We want to clarify that no children were made to recite the Quran. Only three Muslim students recited it. This is a secular school.”

According to the report, a senior police officer said that the school organised such programmes for every religious festival, be it Hindu, Muslim or Christian.

Other media outlets like Siasat Daily also reported the same.

Even the Karnataka government’s official website has not carried any circular or press release over Quran recitation in schools. We could not find any report corroborating the viral claim. Our team has also approached the office of Minister for Primary & Secondary Education, Madhu Bangarappa, for their official statement. It will be updated once we receive a response from their side.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the Bakrid celebration post has gone viral falsely claiming that the Quran recitation has been mandated in Karnataka government schools.
