PM Modi To Receive Grand Welcome At BJP HQ After Successful G20 Summit

Date:

New Delhi: The BJP Headquarters in New Delhi is all set with preparations for a lively gathering on Wednesday evening. Thousands of party workers are coming together to give a grand welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the successful G20 Summit. India’s enthusiastic hosting of the summit has ignited a sense of pride and celebration.

The conclusion of the prestigious summit and its success in reaching a consensus on the New Delhi Declaration marks a significant diplomatic victory. India’s effective leadership during its G20 presidency and its advocacy for Global South concerns have further bolstered its bid for a permanent United Nations Security Council seat.

Immediately following the warm welcome, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will get down to electoral matters. He will participate in the BJP’s Central Election Committee meeting, where candidates for the crucial Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh elections will be deliberated upon.

On August 16, the committee convened a prior meeting during which candidates were declared for 39 constituencies in Madhya Pradesh, under BJP governance, and 21 constituencies in Chhattisgarh, under Congress rule. These selections were made for constituencies where the BJP did not possess incumbent MLAs.

Sources indicate that the meeting scheduled for Wednesday is expected to involve discussions on candidates for 50 constituencies in Madhya Pradesh and 35 constituencies in Chhattisgarh. Madhya Pradesh houses 230 Assembly seats, while Chhattisgarh comprises 90.

The committee’s additional members include BJP President J P Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The unusual early announcement of candidates in August, a full three months before the state elections, surprised many as it marked the first instance where the BJP revealed a list prior to the Election Commission of India announcing the poll dates.

This move was viewed as an effort to preempt any internal party conflicts and address issues ahead of elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram. This was particularly crucial as the party had faced defeats in all these states in 2018, except for Mizoram, where an NDA ally had formed the government, with the BJP as a minor partner.

The BJP made a strong comeback in the subsequent Lok Sabha elections, sweeping Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh while performing better than the Congress in Telangana. It also successfully ousted the Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh after a rebellion led by Jyotiraditya Scindia, with Shivraj Singh Chouhan becoming chief minister in 2020.

Similar to 2018, the upcoming elections in these five states are considered a ‘semi-final’ ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year. Their significance has been amplified by the BJP’s substantial loss in Karnataka in May, leaving the party without power in any state in South India.
