Fact Check: Viral Post Claiming Disparity By Rajasthan Government Over Ex-gratia Payment In Kanahiyalal Murder Case Is Misleading

Date:

Recently, a man identified as Iqbal died in Jaipur’s Ramganj after a mob allegedly beat him following an accident involving two motorcycles. Against the same backdrop, a post attributed to the Rajasthan Government goes viral on social media, claiming that the state government provided compensation of ₹50 lakh to the family of Iqbal, who got killed in a recent Jaipur accident, whereas a compensation of only ₹5 lakh was given when Kanhaiyalal was brutally murdered in Udaipur.

[English translation: Government announced a compensation of ₹50 lakh for Iqbal, who was killed in a fight in Ramganj, Jaipur. When Kanhaiyalal was brutally murdered in Udaipur, a compensation of ₹5 lakh was given and today the compensation is ₹50 lakh. The difference is clear, this is what Congress is saying. Discrimination policy. There will be a change in Rajasthan.]

FACT CHECK

NewMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be False.

With an open keyword search, the NM team identified a report by Indian Express, dated October 1, 2023. According to the report, a scuffle broke out between two groups after a man was allegedly killed in a road rage incident in Rajasthan’s Jaipur. The whole incident was captured on CCTV cameras. After the incident, the government handed over a cheque of ₹50 lakh as ex-gratia to his family, while Iqbal’s brother Adnan was given a contractual job as per rules.

While searching for the compensation paid by the Rajasthan government to the Kanahiyalal family, our team found a Hindustan Times report, dated June 30, 2022, saying that tailor Kanhaiyalal was beheaded at his shop in the Lake City after he shared remarks supportive of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma on social media. Later Ashok Gehlot’s government had announced 50 lakh compensation to the victim’s family and jobs to his children.

Many other media outlets like The Times of India, and Financial Express also reported the same.

Also, a tweet by the official X Handle of the Department of Information & Public Relations (DIPR), Rajasthan, describes that the post is misleading. A sum of ₹50 lakh as ex-gratia has been handed over to the family of Kanahiyalal. The Rajasthan government has provided jobs to both of his sons.

Thus, it is confirmed that the Rajasthan government has provided equal compensation to the deceased family and the viral claim is false.
