Fact Check: Old Video Of Cloud Cover In Andhra Pradesh Linked To Cyclone Michaung

Date:

On December 5, Cyclone Michaung made landfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh, causing continuous heavy rainfall in Andra Pradesh and Chennai. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on December 6 said the cyclone Michaung weakened into a depression over northeast Telangana.

Against the backdrop, a video showing cloud cover over an ocean is being widely shared on social, claiming that it’s the cyclone effect at Machilipatnam beach in Andhra Pradesh.

Some users shared the same video as that from Nellore and Chirala beach in Andhra Pradesh.

The above posts can be seen here, here and here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be false.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, the NM team traced a YouTube page carrying the same viral clip on September 27, 2021, stating that these visuals were from Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

Another post by ‘Andhra Pradesh weatherman’ had carried the same video on Instagram page, dated June 17, 2021, with the text, “Kalingapatnam Beach, Srikakulam#Vizag #vizagite #visakhapatnam #vizagcity #vizagforever #vizagdiaries #vizagcelebrities #vizagblogger #vizagist #vizagphotography.” The bio states that Sai Praneeth Burah, the trusted weather blogger, gives complete Andhra Pradesh weather updates.

As per Google Maps, these beaches are at a substantial distance from one another.

Thus, it can be concluded that an old video is being shared with a false claim.
