Fact Check: Outdated Clip Of Landowners-NHAI Officials Face-off Viral With Fake Claims

Date:

According to the Haryana Police, individuals who engaged in violence and property damage during the farmers’ protest along the Punjab-Haryana border will face passport and visa revocation. Ambala DSP Jogindeer Sharma informed newsmen that those responsible for violent acts have been identified, and measures will be implemented to revoke their passports and visas. Meanwhile, a 55-second viral video is being widely circulated, claiming these scenes are from the ongoing farmers’ protest.

A Facebook user posted with a caption: “पैसों का बंटवारा बराबर होना चाहिए*😁😁 नकली किसान लगे आपस में ही लड़ने🤣 (English translation: Distribution of money should be equal*😁😁 Fake farmers started fighting among themselves🤣).”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be False.

Running a Reverse Image Search on video keyframes, our NM team traced a Facebook post by the official account of Gurnam Singh Charuni, dated January 31, 2024, with a caption: “खेत के रास्ते का पुल जो रास्ते से 1 मीटर नीचे खोद कर बना दिया ताकि मिट्टी कम डालनी पड़े अधिकारियों से झड़प बंदा बना दूँगा बंदा NHAI के अधिकारी को जो नए रोड़ की क्रासिंग व पुलिया बनाने बारे अधिकारी की पोल खोल वीडियो!👊👊👊👊👊👊.”

As per the original full video, people are discussing why the underpass bridge was built there, and then government personnel is heard saying that he will be there for the next 15 years. He further said: “Need not worry, sir. We are working 24×7 to complete this,” after which a Sikh man said, “If we are not able to be here, you guys would have illegally built this fully and later informed us. Seriously, shame on your engineering”. The official is heard answering, “Don’t insult our work, sir. We are working very hard.”

Sikh replied to the government official that one crore will be saved from the project and five lakhs will be taken by the official. The government official said, “Don’t bluntly say we are corrupt, and now enough, I’m leaving this meeting.”

We also found another Facebook post on the Punjabi Page with a similar clip, which clarified that it’s a land dispute between landowners and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officers, but has been falsely linked to the ongoing farmers’ protest.

Hence, we can conclusively say that an outdated footage, showing a confrontation between landowners and NHAI officials, has gone viral falsely linking it to the ongoing farmers’ protest.
