New Delhi: Former Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday amid the possibility of contesting the Lok Sabha polls From Amritsar, Punjab. He joined the party in the presence of the party’s general secretaries Vinod Tawde and Tarun Chugh.
While joining the BJP, he spoke about the growth of the Indo-US relationship and said development has been its focus area in a host of fields like the semiconductor industry. He said that this development should reach his home town Amritsar while thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and party President JP Nadda for his political innings.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar extended warm wishes to Sandhu on his decision to join BJP. Welcoming Sandhu to the party, Jaishankar expressed confidence in Sandhu’s capabilities. Jaishankar affirmed his belief that Sandhu would continue to make significant contributions to the nation’s development and progress.
Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), EAM Jaishankar wrote, “Welcome to@BJP4India, Ambassador@SandhuTaranjitS.Our close association gives me fullest confidence that you will continue contributing to the nation’s development and progress.”
Who is Taranjit Singh Sandhu?
- Sandhu is a retired Indian Diplomat who served as the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka and the 28th Ambassador of India to the United States.
- He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1988.
- He held positions as Deputy Chief of Mission in the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and Consul General in Frankfurt. Additionally, he held a variety of positions at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
- Early in February 2020, Sindhu took over as Indian Ambassador to the US after he presented his credentials to former US President Donald Trump. He held the position until January 31, 2024.
- Indian ambassador to The Netherlands, Reenat Sandhu, is his spouse.
