New York: Every year, numerous Indian students embark on their dream of pursuing higher studies in the United States. This journey is often marked by a blend of excitement and anxiety. Recognising the necessity for careful navigation through this transition, former Chairman & CEO of PepsiCo, Indra Nooyi, has shared invaluable advice with Indian students planning to relocate to the US for their studies.

In a video shared by the Consulate General of India in New York on X (formerly known as Twitter), Nooyi emphasized the significance of mindful actions from the moment of arrival in the country.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nooyi underscored the importance for Indian students to carefully consider their choice of university and course of study in the United States. She emphasized the need for thoughtful decision-making in light of these realities.

  • Nooyi highlighted concerns over instances of Indian students being embroiled in drug abuse cases in the United States. Describing it as a “lethal” issue, Nooyi emphasized the grave consequences of drug intake, citing its severe impacts on both mental and physical health, as well as its detrimental effects on career prospects.
  • Indra Nooyi stressed the importance of prioritising positive mental health, especially amidst the demanding US education system and fast-paced lifestyle. She highlighted common student struggles with stress and feelings of isolation, proposing simple yet effective coping mechanisms such as journaling, reading, traveling, and regular exercise.

  • Nooyi emphasized the importance of vigilance against scam artists. She cautioned students to safeguard their personal and financial information, warning that scam artists are constantly on the lookout for unsuspecting individuals to exploit. Stressing the need for caution, she urged students to refrain from divulging sensitive information to anyone, thereby reducing the risk of falling prey to fraudulent schemes.
  • Nooyi urged students to avoid shady neighborhoods, especially at night and when alone, she recommends group outings and utilising university resources for support. Nooyi’s emphasis underscores the importance of personal safety awareness among students.
  • The former PepsiCO CEO emphasized the paramount importance of maintaining a focus on their primary objective: acquiring knowledge and honing skills to become leaders in their chosen fields. Encouraging students to broaden their horizons, she urged them not to confine themselves solely to job opportunities in the US but also to contemplate returning to India to contribute to the nation’s advancement.
