Karnataka CM Yeddyurappa defers compensation to victims of police firing

Mangaluru: Karnataka CM BS Yeddyurappa while talking to the reporters on Wednesday announced the reversal of his previous decision to compensate the kin of the victims who were killed in the police firing last week during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Last Sunday, he had announced a compensation of Rs 10 Lakhs to the kin of those who were killed in the police firing.

He further added that the amount will not be paid till an investigation into the matter is concluded and the victims are declared innocent.

The state government has ordered a magisterial as well as a CID inquiry into the matter.

Nausin, aged 23 and Jalil Kudroli 49 were killed in the police firing. The family members of the victims have stated that they are innocent and had nothing to do with the protests. However, the city Police has named them as the accused in the FIR registered.

The Chief Minister called the riots that rocked the city last week as a well-planned conspiracy and resolved to punish all those who were involved in it, including the conspirators.

On the issue getting heckled on a private visit to the neighbouring state of Kerala, he refused to comment.
