Fact Check: Print Advt From 2000 Viral As Image Of Real Race Between Cheetah & Dogs

Date:

An image showing dogs racing and a cheetah sitting at the starting gate is being circulated online with a claim that the image shows a real experiment, which was conducted to see if dogs can outrun a cheetah in a race. However, at the time of the race, while the dogs ran, the cheetah kept sitting.

The image was shared with the text: Don’t Prove Yourself Everywhere!! This speed race wanted to know the fastest, the dogs or the cheetah. But the cheetah did not move a finger and sat in place. People asked the race coordinator what happened. He responded after seeing him saying: “Sometimes trying to prove that you are the best is an insult!”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the post to be misleading.

A simple Reverse Image Search on the picture led us to a website called Ads Spot. The title of the picture read, “Audi Print CHEETAH by BBH London.”

As per the picture description, the ad was released in January 2000. “The Print Ad titled CHEETAH was done by BBH London advertising agency for subbrand: Audi S4 Quattro (brand: Audi) in the United Kingdom. It was released in Jan 2000,” it said.

Another website, Adeevee, also uploaded the same image in November 2000.

This proves that the image is not of a genuine experiment but an advertisement that was released in 2000.

However, we also ran a search and found that in December 1937, a race between cheetahs and greyhounds was held at London’s Romford Stadium.  According to Romford Recorder, a series of events were scheduled to take place throughout the week commencing December 11 that year.

The website mentioned that when there were nice cheetahs in total and different cheetahs participated in different races in the series. The site mentioned that in one of the races, which was held between a female Cheetah named Helen and two greyhounds, she leapt out of her cage leaving the dogs standing, reaching 50mph within two seconds and finishing the track in 15.86 seconds.

It is also mentioned that the Cheetahs participated in several other races over the following year and were later sold to circus veteran Jack Harvey.

From the above fact check, it is clear that the post in circulation is misleading.
