Roe vs Wade Overturned: Joe Biden, Barack and Michelle Obama, Others React To US Top Court Judgement

Date:

Washington: The United States Supreme Court on Friday overturned the 50 years old standing abortion rights law set in America while favoring a verdict on the strict Mississippi abortion law.

The US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. landmark verdict that institutionalized legal abortion across America for 50 years, now ceases to exist. The judgement made on Friday by the court is termed one of the most consequential verdicts, which many women termed as taking away the rights over their own bodies. Following the verdict, many states will impose a ban on abortion with Missouri becoming the first state to do so right after the judgement.

US President Joe Biden called it a “sad day” for the country. In a statement, he urged the American citizens to “elect more senators and representatives who will codify the women’s right to choose in the federal law once again.”

He further asked the people of America to “elect more state leaders to protect this (Abortion Rights) rights at local levels. We need to restore the protections of Roe as the law of lands.”

Further expressing his concern in a tweet, he added “Nearly 50 years ago, Roe vs. Wade was decided. Today, the Supreme Court of the United States expressly took away a constitutional right from the American people.”

Former President of the United States Barack Obama in a tweet said that “Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues—attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans.”

The judgment made by the Supreme Court is said to be on the ideological views, passed by a bench of six conservative justices which included five men.

The United Nations Human Rights in a tweet termed the judgment as a “major setback for women’s rights and gender equality”. Nancy Pelosi, the House Speaker termed the judgment as “a slap in the face of women”.
