Fact Check: Did Israel Lock Up Palestinian Children In Prison? Here’s the Truth

Date:

A picture is widely shared on social media claiming that Palestinian children are behind bars in an Israeli prison. Many online users have criticised Israel for such treatment towards children.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: Palestinian kids placed in cages by cruel, belligerent Israel: #nazisionistidimerda

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the picture, we identified a tweet, dated February 11, 2021,  by a verified profile StopAntisemitism — a leading non-partisan American-based organisation fighting antisemitism. The tweet had debunked an earlier claim to the picture that it was showing a comparison between the holocaust and America’s immigration crisis.

In reply to the tweet, @Stopantisemitism clarified that the children in the picture are Palestinian kids playing in a soup kitchen in 2010. The group gave LA Times to be its source.

We could not find the exact article in the LA Times’ archives section. But conducting a Google Keyword Search, we found the same image uploaded on EPA images — a European visual content provider.

The picture looks like a wider shot of the viral image and this shows that the children are not behind bars in a prison. We can see few children standing outside of the structure as well, proving that the structure is open. The description of the image informs that children are waiting to receive food at a soup kitchen in the West Bank city of Hebron in 2010.

Similar images of the same soup kitchen from 2010 were also found on Reuters pictures as well, and the descriptions of these images, too, corroborate the claim that children are waiting in line at a soup kitchen.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral photo claiming Israel has kept Palestinian children behind bars in a prison is fake.
