Part of Chennai monorail project to be on PPP mode: TN govt

Chennai, Aug 29 (PTI) Tamil Nadu government today saidthat a part of the 43 km-long Chennai monorail project isproposed to be taken up under Public Private Partnership (PPP)mode at an estimated project cost of Rs 3,267 crore. Transport Minister M R Vijayabhaskar informed theTamil Nadu Assembly that Poonamallee-Kathipara with a linkfrom Porur to Vadapalani (20.68 km) "is proposed to beimplemented under the Public Private Partnership". It is proposed to be implemented under the PPP mode on"Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer basis with anestimated project cost of Rs 3,267 crore," he said. Further, the Vandalur to Velachery stretch of 22.80 kmis proposed to be taken up under multilateral funding at anestimated project cost of Rs 3135.63 crore, he said, adding, aproposal has been sent to the Centre in this regard. Vijayabhaskar said that though the 43.48 km Chennaimonorail scheme was announced by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaain 2006, the subsequent DMK government had, however, put it in"cold storage".
