Govt teacher killed in ‘unprovoked lathicharge’

Lucknow: A government teacher died and some others were injured when police allegedly used canes to disperse them while they were moving towards the Vidhan Sabha to hold the protest demanding the restoration of the pension scheme.

President of UP unit of Pension Bachao Manch of All Teachers and Employees Welfare Association (ATEWA) Vijay Bahadur Bandhu claimed police used lathis to disperse teachers when they were moving towards Vidhan Sabha complex after sitting on dharna at Laxman Mela ground in support of their demand for restoration of pension for government teachers.

While one teacher, Ramashish (38), belonging to Hata in Kushinagar was “killed in the unprovoked police action”, several others were injured and admitted to the hospital, Bandhu claimed.

Police, when contacted, said the mild force was used to chase them away but did not immediately confirm any death or injury.

Agitated over the police action, the angry teachers blocked the road in front of the civil hospital and demanded Rs one crore compensation and job to the dependent of the deceased from the government.

Senior SP leader Manzil Saini rushed to the hospital to bring the situation under control.

The teachers also insisted that Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav should come to the hospital to meet the agitated teachers and suspend policemen responsible for lathi charge.
