Malda gangrape: Activists call on judiciary to fast track case

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 8: Following the brutal gangrape of a disabled girl in Malda, West Bengal, Women’s activist Brinda Adige stressed on the need to have the case fast tracked by the judiciary, so that the victim gets justice in the swiftest manner possible.

“The tragedy is that this differently abled girl will not be able to explain what she went through. This means a big job for the judiciary. They cannot take next five years like in Nirbhaya case. They have to fast track the case and give justice as soon as possible to teach a lesson to all perpetrators who think they can walk free even after committing such crimes because the system is not fast enough,” Adige told the media.

She asserted that violence against women has been on rise, however, thankfully because of media a lot of them are now reported but still the system has not strengthened or improved.

She also asked the police to act fast and find the rapists as soon as possible.

On Saturday evening a deaf and mute 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three men at a mango orchard in West Bengal’s Malda district.

The incident took place when the victim along with her younger sister and a friend went to the orchard to fetch mangoes.

“A group of at least three youth pounced on the girl and her sister and tried to drag them to a secluded place. The younger girl managed to escape, but her deaf and mute sister could not,” a district police officer said.

The younger girl ran to the village and informed the people, who rushed to the spot.

The girl was found the disabled girl at another mango orchard, senseless and bleeding profusely.

The culprits have not been identified or caught yet at remain at large. Meanwhile, the police have detained a few youth for questioning.
