Fact Check: Old Image Falsely Shared As Ukrainian Children Sending Off Soldiers To Fight Russians

Date:

As thousands of Ukrainian men join the country’s military to fight Russian invasion, an image in which two children can be seen biding adieu to soldiers is being widely shared on social media. It is being claimed that it is a recent image of Ukrainian children sending off soldiers to fight Russians amid the ongoing war.

The image is being shared on Facebook with the caption, “This photo brought tears to my eyes. Two young Ukrainian children sending off soldiers to fight the Russians. The kids holding hands, the girl holding a stuffed animal, the boy (her brother?) salutes. Look what he has on his back. This picture speaks a thousand words.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

A Yandex Reverse Image Search directed us to a Ukraine based news website that carried the same image on March 23, 2016. The headline of the article can be translated in English to, “A series of photos “Children of War” was published by the Ministry of Defense.”

The same image was also carried in another Ukraine based news website on March 23, 2016, stating that “THE MINISTRY OF DEFENSE HAS PUBLISHED TOUCHING PHOTOS OF YOUNG UKRAINIANS FROM THE ANTI-TERRORIST OPERATION ZONE.” According to the report, the images were part of a photo album titled “Children of War” credited to Ukrainian photographer Dmytro Muravsky.

Searching further, we found that over the years the same image has been used by several media outlets

Although we could not independently verify whether the image is real or digitally altered, but is evident from the above information that the viral image dates back to 2016 and is not related to the recent Ukraine-Russia conflict.
