With a keyword search, the NM team found the report on the verified YouTube channel of the media outlet Hindustan Times, dated September 18, 2018, with a title: “Congress played important role in India’s freedom struggle, says Mohan Bhagwat.”
The video description reads: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is holding a three-day lecture series with supremo Mohan Bhagwat in the national capital. Speaking at the event, Bhagwat said Congress played a big role in the freedom movement and gave India many great personalities. Bhagwat said: “Our people have less political understanding. Political awareness is quite essential. Congress led a great movement in history. It gave us prominent personalities. Congress played an important role in India’s freedom struggle.”
Similar reports were also published by media outlets NDTV, ABP News and Amar Ujala in 2018. The NDTV report mentioned that Bhagwat was speaking at a three-day conclave organised by RSS in New Delhi.
Thus, based on the above fact check, it can be concluded that the video in circulation, claiming RSS chief Bhagwat praising the Congress party for its contribution to India’s freedom movement, is old.
