Fact Check: Video of Mass Cremation In Ranchi Shared As That From Hyderabad

Date:

A video showing mass cremations in an open ground is being shared on social media with a claim that it was taken on the Tipu Khan Bridge in Hyderabad.

A social media user shared the video with the caption, “Tipu Khan Bridge Langarhouz Hyderabad”.

The post links can be seen here, here and here.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the claim and found it to be misleading.

We put the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search and found a similar video uploaded on Facebook on May 1, 2021. The caption of the video read, “Ranchi namkum”.

With that information, we ran a Google Search with some keywords like ‘Ranchi’, ‘Mass cremation’ etc and found a video on YouTube published by India Today on April 13, 2021. The title of the video read, “कोरोना पर रांची से रिपोर्ट”.

The video shows the ground in the viral video and the bridge from a different angle.

On comparing the visuals of the viral video to the crematorium in Ranchi, we could see some similarities between both the locations which suggested that the viral video was shot in Ranchi.

Further, we found a report on pyres being set up at Ghagra ghat near Subarnarekha river in Ranchi published by The Times of India on April 14, 2021. The title of the video read, “Health system falls apart in Ranchi, Covid spike sparks ‘medical loot’.

As per the caption of the picture, the administration had to set up large pyres at Ghagra ghat near Subarnarekha river on Tuesday to cremate bodies of Covid-19 casualties after the LPG-powered furnace at Mukti Dham crematorium went defunct on April 12, 2021.

We compared the picture in the report to the visuals in the video in question which made it clear that the video shows mass cremation in Ranchi.

We further checked the pictures of the Tipu Khan Bridge in Hyderabad and found that the bridge is not the one shown in the viral video.

Hence, from the above fact check, it is clear that the video shows mass cremations being held in Ranchi, not Hyderabad, and the post, therefore, is misleading.
